The stanza can be crucial as a tool to shape the reader’s unfolding experience of a poem as it can give poets flexibility and structure, as well as allowing poets to break and mould that structure to match the content of the poem, giving stanzas great power to affect a poem. Wyatt’s use of the stanza is remarkably effective, showing a true understanding of the way the form can impact a reader’s interpretation of a poem as well as going on to have a large impact on the use of stanzas by subsequent poets. In ‘Blame Not My Lute’, this is strikingly apparent, as Wyatt’s use of stanzas allows the meaning of the refrain to alter each time it is repeated throughout the poem, slowly revealing the true meaning of the poem and the refrain to the reader, and allowing the use of the chorus-like refrain without it becoming ritualistic or boring, to give the poem a more song-like quality. Wyatt may have also had reason to initially hide the meaning of the poem and then reveal it gradually as the poem unfolds as it is possible he was having an affair with Anne Boleyn, adding an undercurrent of potential political danger. Therefore as time went on and rumours developed, the poem gained additional meaning to some readers, partially owing to Wyatt’s excellent use of the stanza.
